OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — In the past three months, Barney "Mac" Brown has been able to generate between $1,300 to $1,600 extra in profits at his self-serve carwash — one example of a growing self-serve industry, USA Today reported.
When Brown saw a woman hosing down her dog at his Mac's Self Service Car Wash in Oklahoma City, he warned her that the high-pressure hose could harm her dog. But she said her dog was too big to fit in her sink and too big to lift into her tub, the article said.
So Brown built Mac's Self Service Dog Wash: A custom-built design that includes wash tubs, hoses and hair dryers.
Professional Car Care Online talked with Brown recently to find out how the public has reacted to the new service.
Brown said that there's been a very good reaction from the public, and an immediate boost to his business as well. This month, Brown estimates the addition of the dog wash will reap over $2,000 in extra profits for him.
"I'm 84 years old, and I've been in several, several business deals — but this is the most responsive deal I've ever been in," said Brown. "I have never had one negative response. "We've had more TV advertising than we could have ever surmised."
Brown said that at this facility, customers only need to spend between $6 - $10, as opposed to $30-40 that they would spend at a pet groomer.
Brown has plans to use his dog wash equipment near the city's new dog park as soon as city and state permits are passed.
